Should we ban clothing from our swimming pools?
In a 2011 paper Browne et al demonstrated that polyester and acrylic fibres found in habitats where there is sewage discharge resemble those used in clothing. Sampling of waste water from domestic washing machines demonstrated that a single garment can produce more than 1900 fibres per wash. http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/es201811s
There has been no research on the level of this pollution in swimming pools neither have the health risks from that pollution been ascertained.
It was alarming to find that swimming pool managers are not aware of this potential health hazard and have no plans to test their pools for this pollution.
